Beauty and Peace

This is a 9x12 oil I painted several weeks ago in Eureka Springs, Arkansas of the Catholic Church. It is one of the world's oddities in architecture in that you enter through the bell tower. It is a beautiful place.

I painted this from a photo in a Robert Bean portrait workshop from a couple of weeks ago. Robert teaches at A&M University in Alabama and he is a very talented artist. I didn't intend for this to have such an old world look. In fact I was going in a total different direction but my hand took over from my brain and this is the result. I had a wonderful time at my Ken Auster workshop and I learned so much. I hope to put that knowledge to work but it is harder than it looks when you see a great artist like Ken do it with such ease and control.

Ken Auster Work Shop

I will not be posting a new painting until Monday. I am going to a Ken Auster work shop in Nashville. It is so exciting as he is one of today's great artists. I will resume my daily paintings on Monday Oct.29.

Catherine's Red Balloons

Posted by Picasa

The original photo for this painting came from a wonderful Flickr friend named Catherine. cattycamehome http://www.flickr.com/photos/cattycamehome/499725562/in/set-72157600215350187/ Her photos are wonderful, this is from a series called red balloon diaries. A genius concept. I hope I did her photo justice. Thanks Catherine! I think I achieved the feeling of depth I was looking for as well as the values seem to work. 8x8 oil on board

The Candy Store Is Calling

A study of an old building in Eureka Springs, Ar. that now houses a candy shop. A very sunny day. I tried to create a lot of reflection to portray how bright the sun is. When I was a small child my dad was a sign painter and he painted a large sign on the side of this building. He was helping out a friend who was also a sign painter. The man called himself By Golly and signed all of his work that way. He was originally from Switzerland and he had very long white hair and beard, he also wore knee high boots. To thank my dad he gave him a fruit cake. Well I was sure he was Santa Claus because of the way he looked and the fruit cake sealed the deal. I also equated Golly with Jolly. I had a wonderful, colorful childhood. 6x8 oil

Episcopal Church Eureka Springs, Ar. Oct.16

Posted by Picasa

This painting was actually uploaded on Oct. 16 but it disappeared on me. so I had to do it again. I don't know if it is a blogger problem or what. Anyhoo. This is a plein air 9x12 oil study.

Night at The Beach

These paintings always seem lonely to me. Although really fun to paint. You are outside while the occupants are inside warm and cozy with all of the comforts. Even when it's a photo! This painting needs a few more touches-like stairs! Duh!

Flower Child-Bench Warmer 12

Posted by Picasa

I have been thinking all week about what makes me keep trying to paint. Aside from the fact that it is in my blood and I have to, it is my need to improve and challenge my self. I have had a hard time for about the last 2 weeks feeling like I can't paint, yet I keep going into the studio and trying all the while enjoying it but feeling inept. The tortured artist I guess.

A New York State Of Mind-Bench Warmers 11

This photo was loaned to me to paint by Andrew Benedetti at Flickr http://www.flickr.com/photos/10320062@N08/896931384/in/set-72157601006570657/ his photos are so wonderful. Thanks so much Andrew! I used very few colors in this very neutral painting. I like the effect. Andrew's image of the man relaxing reading the paper in front on the concrete wall is very interesting to me. He is relaxing but the surfaces are so hard and cold. I hope I represented that in the painting.

The Letter-Bench Warmers 9

The light floods in to this darkened cool building and creates the drama of the couple reading a letter in a peaceful setting. The cane and posture of the couple makes me think perhaps the letter is about health issues or something else that is serious. Perhaps it is only a map.

Dating-Bench Warmers 6

A very fast study and I enjoyed the free brushstrokes and painterly feeling of this one. I didn't worry too much about details. I am working hard on learning to eliminate in my compositions. From a flickr photo I will post link when I can find it!

Miss M.

This is a portrait of my great niece Miss M.M. I am leaning toward painting portraits more and more. Still I dont want to be catagorized as an artist. I am currently studying on how to mix the best skin tones and I want to paint portraits in a more painterly fashion.
