Comin' Up Roses

I decided to take a more abstract approach to these roses. The way I was trained to paint was so opposite of this. It is still difficult for me to abstract and simplify. 8x10 oil on board

Innocent

I had so much fun painting this. It has a lot of texture with the brush strokes and I love the bright colors.

Girl With The Pearl Earring My Study

I was dying to try a study Of Vermeer's Girl With The Pearl Earring. Upon comparison I can see I have some tweeking to do with color and shadow, but I feel my study was actually not too bad. 12x16 oil A great learning experience is to copy the old masters, although there is no real comparison, I had fun.

Beauty Is....

A fascinating subject. Women applying makeup. It is a kind of sisterhood a kinship, the way we apply our mascara, pursing our lips. Strange expressions. A fun study to do in a stylistic manor. 6"x8" oil

Madonna Of The Roses

I made up this girls face. I used the Small Cowpert Madonna by Raphael as an influence. I am experimenting with unusual stylistic paintings of faces 12x16 oil

Cozy Sunflowers

I have been wanting to paint sunflowers for a while. This is from a photo. You can not really see it but there is heavy texture in this painting. The painting also evokes a calming mood to me. 24x36 oil.

The Napper

I had hoped to convey an older gentleman on a very bright hot summer day, napping on a bench. I hope the subtleties of the background show up. The values are dark so I hope it works.

Dog Walker

I tried to really work on my values in this piece. I think I am improving that when working from a photo where you have to create them sometimes. There is nothing like painting from life but that is not always possible so you use your memory to get it.

Japanese Garden Birmingham Alabama

This is a beautiful, peaceful place in the middle of a busy city. Reflections are hard for me for some reason, I don't like to paint them they seem tedious to me. I think this one worked out ok though. I used a lot of paint on a 6x8 gray toned gessoed board.

Small Cowpert Madonna Homage to Raphael (finished)

This was a great exercise and so much fun. I love the softness of Raphael's portraits, the faces always seem exactly as they should. 8x10 oil on pintura board.

Homage To Raphael (in progress)

From time to time it is good practice for an artist to study the old masters. I love Raphael and I am painting my interpretation of Raphael's Small Cowper Madonna circa 1505. It is impossible to try to render a painting such as the original but it is good study practice for me. I am in progress with this painting and it is 8"x10" oil.

Cathy's Santa

This Santa painting was a commission piece for my dear friend Cathy. The idea I have to say came from Paula Deen's nephew Jay Hiers who painted one for her. However I borrowed the idea the image is different. This piece is huge 30x40 oil. Other paintings with slightly different faces can be commissioned for $400.00. Happy Holidays!
